(February 28, 2025) William Stanek: A Life of Service, Creativity, and Lasting Impact

William Stanek is many things to many people—tech guru, award-winning author, fine art photographer, mentor, and veteran. Yet at his core, he’s a person driven by a desire to uplift others through knowledge, creativity, and the belief that real beauty lies in authenticity and passion.

Impact and Legacy: How William’s Work Has Touched Lives

Over the years, William’s books, art, and teachings have reached millions. Whether guiding someone through the complexities of Windows Server or inspiring them to see the world with new eyes through photography, William has consistently been a catalyst for positive change.

By supporting William’s work, you become part of a larger mission—one dedicated to uplifting, inspiring, and empowering. Every book read, every photograph admired, helps sustain a vision of a world where creativity knows no limits and every story has the power to change a life.

Background and Military Service

William was born in Burlington, Wisconsin, as the second youngest of five children. After attending public schools in Racine, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1985, embarking on a two-year training in Intelligence and Linguistics at the Defense Language Institute. His service took him around the world, including Asia and Europe. In 1990, he was chosen for Air Combat School and soon found himself serving in the Persian Gulf War, flying over 200 combat and combat support missions.

Military Honors

William’s 11-year military career earned him an impressive array of 29 decorations. Among them are:

After completing his service in 1996, William settled in Washington State, drawn to the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest. He went on to earn his BS in Computer Science (magna cum laude) in 1994 and an MS in Information Systems (with distinction) in 1995 from Hawaii Pacific University.

The Heart of a Veteran

William’s military experiences forever shaped his worldview. Themes of bravery, sacrifice, and resilience echo throughout his writing—both in his nonfiction accounts (such as Stormjammers) and in the fictional worlds he builds. These same values fuel his advocacy for fellow veterans. He works tirelessly to ensure they receive recognition, respect, and resources, using his platform to highlight the challenges veterans face and the support systems they need.

A Legacy in Writing and Art

Known worldwide for his contributions to technology, William was once considered the #1 Microsoft guru—a top authority on Windows, Windows Server, SQL Server, Exchange Server, and web technologies. Over two decades, he penned influential technical books for Microsoft, O’Reilly, and other major publishers, helping countless professionals and peers navigate complex systems. His expertise has even been quoted in various business publications, including those by Donald Trump.

Where Creativity Meets Compassion

Today, William calls the Pacific Northwest home. When he’s not writing, teaching, or consulting, you’ll find him hiking, biking, backpacking, or traveling—most likely with a Sony Alpha camera in hand, ready to capture a fleeting sunrise or a stunning waterfall. Each image he shares is another invitation to see the world through his eyes: brimming with possibility, color, and quiet moments of wonder.

Ultimately, William Stanek’s story is about service, innovation, and authenticity. His journey—from a curious Wisconsin kid to a decorated veteran and internationally recognized author/artist—demonstrates that creativity flourishes when fueled by passion and a desire to make a difference. By learning about or engaging with his work, you become part of a community that values resilience, artistry, and the simple, transformative power of sharing a story.
