After attending public schools in Racine, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1985, embarking on a two-year training in Intelligence and Linguistics at the Defense Language Institute. In 1990, he was chosen for Air Combat School and soon found himself serving in the Persian Gulf War, flying over 200 combat and combat support missions.
